Blockley and the Surrounding Area

Blockley was a centre for silk milling in the 19th century. Today it is a picturesque Cotswold village with a medieval church, 2 pubs and the fabulous new Village Shop/ Post Office/ Cafe which has WiFi and is famous for its excellent bacon baguettes and hot chocolate!

Skylark Cottage is within easy reach of Moreton-in-Marsh (which has train links to London), Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Campden, Cheltenham (well known for its Races and Festivals) and Stratford-on-Avon (birthplace of William Shakespeare and home of the Royal Shakespeare Company). Stratford is also home to a Butterfly Farm and many Shakespeare tours. Oxford is easily accessible by train from Moreton, much easier than driving, and many of the famous university colleges are open to the public as well as the Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums.

There are many National Trust properties nearby:  Hidcote Manor has some of the finest gardens in the country, Snowshill Manor (and nearby  Snowshill Lavender Farm) and Chastleton House are only a short drive away. Kiftsgate Gardens are also near Hidcote. Batsford Arboretum and Sezincote House and garden are only a short drive from Blockley.

Longborough Festival Opera is popular in the summer as is Gifford’s Circus which tours the Cotswolds with their amazing shows.

Other Cotswold villages to visit are Bourton-on-the-Water, Broadway (and Broadway Tower) and The Slaughters. Those in search of architectural splendour could visit Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe, Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxford with the dreaming spires or Warwick or Kenilworth Castle.
